Non-fiction texts vs. Fiction
Learning Goal:
We are learning to read and understand non-fiction texts. A non-fiction text explains and gives us true and accurate information about different topics (e.g. animals, space, history, science, etc.) so that we can learn about them.
Success Criteria:
We know we have achieved this when…
- I can find the features of a non-fiction text in a book and name them
√ Table of Contents – A list of a text’s sections found in the front of the text. It tells readers what information
is in the book and the page number to find that information.
√ Titles – It tells what the page is about.
√ Pictures – Real photographs or drawings.
√ Labels – It tells the name of an object shown in a picture.
√ Captions – A sentence or two that tells what a picture is about or showing. It usually comes with a picture.
√ Index – It is an alphabetical list of important subjects/topics in the text that is found in the back of a text. It
