Explanatory Writing
Learning Goal: We are learning to explain how to do something or how something works in our writing.
We are successful when:
-We can explain all steps in the correct order
-We are not missing any steps
-Our writing has a beginning, middle, and an end

Step 1: Brainstorming
Before we start writing, we must explore what we know HOW TO DO! Look at the example below for some ideas. From there, we will choose one idea that we know we will be able to explain STEP BY STEP.
Step 2: Organizing
After choosing your topic, you must write it down in your graphic organizer. Then, you must write down the materials necessary in this task. For example, with "How to Play Tic-Tac-Toe, you will need: paper, pencil, and a friend.
Next, write down each step quickly while you are thinking about it STEP BY STEP. After completing each step, fill in your sequence words! This is the easy part! After that, expand upon your steps to provide more details. |
Step 3: Draft
Now, it is time to bring all of our ideas together into a clear beginning, middle and end. In your BEGINNING, you must introduce the topic and materials (minimum 2 sentences). In your MIDDLE, you must show each step with its sequence word and detail. TWO SENTENCES PER STEP. In your END, you must restate your topic and conclude your idea.
Step 4 and 5: Revise and Edit
STep 6: PUBLISH!
After making sure you have completed all of your revisions and edits, it is now time to complete your final copy! Congratulations!
